Women’s Self Defense: Parking Lot Safety

Everyday we hear about people being attacked, mugged, or assaulted – especially women. One of the top five places for assaults is parking lots. It is the perfect setting for a predator to search for a target due to dim lighting, multiple places to hide and distracted potential victims. To lessen the possibility that you could become a victim of an assault, here are a few safety tips:

First, ALWAYS MAKE SURE TO HAVE YOUR KEYS IN HAND WHEN LEAVING A BUILDING. Targets are often distracted and unaware of their surroundings. Walking through a parking lot or garage with your head down, or rummaging through a bag for your keys allows a predator time to single you out.images-2

Second, REMEMBER WHERE YOU PARKED YOUR CAR. Even if you have to write it on your hand, it is a bad idea to be seen wandering around the parking lot looking for it. The longer you are there, the greater the chances are that you will be attacked.

Third, HAVE YOUR KEYS PREPARED AS A WEAPON. You do this by placing the longest key in your hand with key base resting in your palm and stem jutting out between your second and third fingers. Make a fist around the base to hold it secure. This allows the key to be used as a defense tool that could puncture an eye if necessary.

Fourth, CHECK YOUR CAR AND SURROUNDINGS. Always check the backseat and any areas around your car before you get in it. You never know where someone may be hiding. If you notice you are parked between or next to a large vehicle such as a van or SUV, use another door to enter the vehicle or even a hatch door if available. You make look silly but you will be safe.
